Dentist fears..

I finally decided to make an appointment that I have been afraid of for YEARS. Yes, I go to the dentist pretty regularly. But there is one thing that I have put off. Getting a crown on my front tooth. June 4th at 10:30 am (in stafford VA)
When I was 12 I was hit in the mouth with a baseball. It almost knocked out my front tooth but the braces I was wearing held my tooth in. (and cut up my gums bad)... The tooth turned gray and ended up dying so they gave me a root canal. They told me back then that the root canal weakens the tooth and eventually I would have to get a crown. I have had to have the tooth internally bleached many times. Now it is cracked, and it keeps getting darker, it is time for a crown...

I am very self consious about smiling because of this... so why am I afraid to get a crown??? and why am I willing to drive all the way up to VA to do it?

The first step in getting a crown is filing a tooth down to the core of the tooth... This picture has two teeth prepared for crowns.

It makes me so sick to think about having my front tooth filed down to that.... of course my teeth aren't that nasty... and my gums aren't that nasty either. But I still feel like vomiting thinking about the process.
Then they take impressions and send them to a lab to make my crown. I get a temporary crown, and I go back in 3 weeks to get the permanent crown...
Then I should have a beautiful smile... but what if I went to a crappy dentist and they screwed up my front tooth???? how do you know if a dentist is good or not untill you try them out?? would you try out a dentist on YOUR front tooth??? I'm just going to someone I trust. I have enough anxiety about it.

  1. yea that makes me really nervous. i have a took in the b ack that was filed down to nuthin and will have a crown. i can't imagine if it were my front tooth....scary stuff. ur braver than me. but honestly, you're tooth never looked bad when i've seen you. but i'm sure being it YOUR tooth, you notice it all the time. best to get it taken care of even if it DOES mean traveling 10 hours.

  2. Okay, so that picture of the teeth really made my stomach hurt. I had to quickly scroll to the bottom. Nasty teeth or just plain NASTY!!!! But your front tooth doesn't look nasty at all...well until they file yours down to a nub...just make sure you don't put your tongue up against it and lick it....you will probably vomit!
